William H. Lanier of Jackson, Mississippi, became the seventh president. Though a Tougaloo College graduate, like most of the previous presidents he had also studied at Fisk University. He too was a fan of Booker T. Washington and his nonpolitical vocational training ideas. He started his administration by concentrating on the industrial education program. He felt that Alcorn was offering insufficient training in agriculture, carpentry, dairying, and stock raising. He also wanted to add harnessing and tailoring.
After the war it was not easy to restore government or even normal life. Property had been destroyed and slaves emancipated. The system of slavery was dead, though the exact status of the freed slaves was uncertain, and conflict revolved around their future. Republicans gained control of the state government, but their own internal disputes and their inability to overcome their own racism as well as the state's made the postwar years turbulent. James L. Alcorn, a native Mississippian, was elected governor, but when he sought a second term, Adelbert Ames, a white northern army officer, defeated him.
In 1897 during the Christmas holidays, he was shot, the suspect being the secretary-treasurer of the college.
